My Musical Experience - and New Stuff!

From the time I played my first real gig at the age of 15, to today - I've been truly blessed with so many great experiences!!! Cheers to all you folks who've been part of my life so far!!!

Throughout my music college years, I played all sorts of gigs from blues, funk, rock, jazz, latin, disco, & big band reading jobs (wearing the tuxedo!) etc, etc. Being a versatile musician meant always working! There were many master classes from great music legends who passed through the college. My greatest memory of Leeds was playing guitar in the "Phil Woods Big Band" while we were playing some incredibly hard chart, and Phil looked over and said "Wow, even the guitarist sounds great!!!" I humbly smiled and replied "Oh, um, cheers Phil!" In 1995 I played my first summer season in Spain, at 2 wonderful towns in the Costa Dorada; Salou, and Tarragona. I loved Spain and returned in 1997, (another great year for me), to work with a great 8 piece Cuban band in the tourist town of Benidorm, Costa Blanca, Spain. We played salsa, merengue and latin jazz....I can say that was the craziest summer of my life.......so far anyway!

Photo of FabianEarlier that same year, I worked as a musician on the "Oriana" cruise ship for a month with my band. The timing was perfect as it fell right on the Easter vacation period. We sailed all over the Mediterranean and had a ball!

At the end of '97, I did an exchange program and studied for a semester in Holland at the Rotterdam Conservatory of music. There I continued to develop my jazz style with a totally different approach from some great teachers at the Conservatory. After returning to Leeds in '98, I decided to spend that summer and the following summer in the USA, working on summer programs and traveling.

I graduated from Leeds in '99 and in the fall left to tour Germany with a jazz trio consisting of me on guitar, bass and drums. We played all over East Germany and some towns in Holland.

Since 2000 I've been living in the States. First in Miami - I had the pleasure of playing with the Gypsy Kings, Eddie Montilla (& The Miami Sound Machine), Jose and Nomar Negroni (The "Negroni Trio"), and Felix Pastorius, son of legend Jaco.

In 2002 I made LA my home I love this town and really feel a 'pulse' here. After doing a lot of traveling I felt It a perfect place to live and work, and immediately the gigs started flowing. Being a pro musician I've always enjoyed the adventure of the 'next gig'!

My first year in LA I played at the 'Playmate of the Year Party' for Rebecca Ramos. I continued to work with many bands on live gigs, as well as forming my own jazz trio, teaching and playing on various sessions. In 2005 I did all the instruments for a TV commercial for the "Spongebob" movie. That year I also played on a record alongside two of my hero's, Vinnie Colaiuta and Gregg Bissonette on drums. Just before Christmas 2006 I did all the guitar work on a movie alongside saxophonist Chris Mostert from the "Eagles", namely "Extra Ordinary Barry".

Since the summer of 2005 I have been recording at my home studio - making lots of music! I use "pro tools", MIDI, and record all the instruments for my music. I also do production work for various artists - ie arranging, producing, & playing all the instruments required.

In 2006 I recorded 30 songs from sessions I did at Loyola Marymount University, and TLC in the San Fernando Valley, and the rest at my home studio. I'm currently putting together 4 albums of new material each of different genres of music.

In March 2007 I launched a brand new Rock Band called "The Fabian Fernandez Band". It consists of original compositions I have been writing since I have been in the States and the energy is through the roof!!!!!!! I formed the 4 piece band, began recording the album, and did a live showcase with "The Fabian Fernandez Band" that same year!

In 2008 I did a tonne of cues for the popular show on Nickelodeon, "Spongebob Squarepants", recording both guitar and bass - which has been a lot of fun! I also continued writing and recording the parts [playing all the instruments with my buddy Cliff Laidlaw on drums] for "The Fabian Fernandez Band".

In 2009, with great satisfaction I completed my 1st solo album by "The Fabian Fernandez Band", namely 'I Welcome you'! It is currently available on iTunes and CD Baby. Completing the album was a huge amount of work and I'd like to give a special thank you to my good friends Cliff Laidlaw (drums), Roy Pahlman (production), Rex Faraday (artwork) and Tito Arenal (photography).

During the release of my album in March 2009 I returned to Wales on vacation to catch up with family and friends. I did some web updates with my web designer and good friend Clive Jones, and had a lot of fun partying in the UK!

I returned to LA in April 2009 where I recorded a Jazz Trio album as promotion for a Jazz tour which will be happening in the spring of 2010 to Germany, Holland, Spain and France. Two more Spongebob episodes which featured a lot of my guitar/bass work also aired in 2009, namely 'Spongebob Vs the Big One' which featured Johnny Depp as lead voice, and 'Tentacle-Vision' where I played the guitar for a character called 'Zeus the Guitar God'.

This year (2010) I completed a 7 week European spring tour with "The Fabian Fernandez Trio" which was an overwhelming success! The last gig at "Swansea Jazzland" took me back to my Welsh roots! The turnout, (which included close family members and many old friends) made it a truly memorable and emotional performance!!!

We keep making dreams come true!!!

Thanks - see you out there................................FF
